Internship FAQs

Currently, the program exists for students currently enrolled or anticipating a transfer to Milligan University. However, Mountain is committed to developing leaders wherever we can. If you aren’t a Milligan student, please contact us and we can talk through what Semester in Ministry could look like for you.

Our Semester in Ministry Internships run approximately 19 weeks each fall (Aug - Dec) and spring (Jan- May) semester.

We follow an apprenticeship model in our internship and residency programs. Every intern is paired with veteran staff members as their supervisor and mentor. A supervisor oversees the intern’s ministry plan and the day to day projects and tasks they’ll be working on, while the mentor is there to check in on how the intern’s soul is doing. Both of these relationships, along with the Equipping Pastor who serves as the director of SiM, ensure interns never feel like they are on their own. There is an appropriate balance of support while the intern also feels empowered to lead and take on new challenges.

Our interns work approximately 25 hours a week including weekly service responsibilities.

We offer internships in all ministry areas: Kids Ministry, Student Ministry, Discipleship & Groups, Pastoral Care & Counseling, Local & Global Impact, Worship & Production, Preaching & Teaching, Digital & Online Ministry, and Sports Ministry; as well as internships in Finance (non-profit accounting), Social Work with The EPICENTER Community Center, Communications & Graphic Design.

As far as campus placement, that is dependent on the makeup of the entire cohort, the interns interest and skill level, and availability of our staff structure.

If coming from out of state, interns live in Host Homes thanks to the generosity and hospitality of Mountain members. Each Host Home provides a private bedroom, bathroom, access to laundry facilities, and wifi.

We do not offer paid internship experiences. However, a majority of our interns receive college credit for their internships. That would need to just be a conversion between the internship director and your school’s academic advisor. The majority of our interns are Milligan University students who come through the Semester in Ministry program, and receive a full 15 credit hours during their time with us (6 of those internship specific credits).

At Mountain, we believe who you are along the way is just as important (if not more so) than the work that you do. Your character will trump your skill set everytime. We are a team that does indeed work hard, but we want to rest well too – integrating soul care rhythms that lead to sustainability and longevity in ministry. We believe in digging our wells deep, staying connected to the source of life. We do ministry with Jesus. As a cohort, both interns and residents spend weekly formation classes reflecting on and discussing different ministerial formation topics such as developing a healthy self, engaging with Scripture, disciple-making essentials, living with integrity, and handling healthy conflict.

We do not normally offer summer internships at Mountain because of the success we’ve seen in a semester-long experience. More time to get hands-on learning and to have the opportunity to see the church rhythm during the lead up to Christmas and Easter is invaluable. However, we occasionally offer Mentored Ministry Experiences for individuals who aren’t able to participate in Semester in Ministry, and those sometimes do happen during the summer.
